What does this screening tool measure?
The PC-PTSD-5 is a brief PTSD screen that begins with a trauma-exposure question. If applicable, five questions ask about symptoms in the past month. Screening thresholds vary by population and setting; a result is a starting point for evaluation.

A gentle place to begin
You do not need to describe a traumatic event here. This screen asks about experiences such as unwanted memories, avoidance, feeling on guard, and feeling disconnected. Your answers stay in your browser.
Understanding this result
After the opening exposure question, each “yes” adds one point, for a total from 0 to 5. The VA describes different screening thresholds depending on the population and setting. This screen encourages further assessment at three or more reported symptoms. A professional can interpret the result in your circumstances.
Support does not depend on a score
A screening result cannot establish or exclude PTSD. If an experience is affecting your sense of safety, relationships, or daily life, you can seek help at any result. You can tell a provider that you would like to discuss trauma without sharing every detail at the first appointment.
